Admission Requirements for BSN Transfer Students

You can apply for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree as a junior-level transfer student, or post-baccalaureate from another college. Learn more about how to apply, prerequisite courses and other admissions requirements.

Transfer BSN Application Timeline

The BSN application opens in August for the following Fall. Submit your Transfer/Post-Bacc Application along with official transcripts from all institutions attended by December 1. Students enrolled in coursework during the fall term in which they are applying must submit updated transcripts showing fall term grades by January 5.

Stage 1: Application Phase

Submit the application and all transcripts by December 1.

If coursework is in progress on December 1, submit all transcripts by the deadline and submit updated official transcripts by January 5 showing coursework completed in the fall term.

Stage 2: Final Notification

Applicants are notified of their admission decision in mid-March via email and application portal. Admitted and waitlisted applicants will have 30 days to respond to the admission decision.

Application Checklist

To apply for the Transfer/Post-Baccalaureate BSN program, applicants must submit a completed transfer application and submit all official transcripts by the December 1 deadline for fall admission. Review the application checklist for detailed application requirements below.

Submit a complete Transfer Application by the December 1 application deadline. The BSN application opens in August for the following fall.

The Prerequisite form is included in the Transfer Application. The Prerequisite Form is an important component of the application where applicants provide detailed information about the completion or planned enrollment of the 10 required prerequisite courses.

A complete prerequisite form will include:

  • Course name and number
  • Institution the course was/will be completed
  • Term the course was or will be completed
  • Grade earned
  • Number of credits earned

There are two application essay questions included in the Transfer application. The application question prompts are:

  1. Please write about your interest in nursing and how you have decided to pursue this career path.
  2. Seattle University Mission: Seattle University is dedicated to educating the whole person, to professional formation, and to empowering leaders for a just and humane world. The Seattle University mission is an integral part of the campus community. How does the university’s mission connect to your personal and educational goals?

Applicants will need to detail their relevant health care, volunteer, work, and/or medical experience in the Activity Log portion of the application. Applicants should include any experience or certifications in this portion of the application.

Students will input the relevant experience directly into the transfer application and the application will format the information for the applicant.

Additional Application Requirements

Applicants must submit Official Transcripts from Each College/University Attended by the December 1 application deadline.

  • Applicants with coursework in progress must submit all official transcripts by the December 1 deadline and submit an updated unofficial transcript for courses completed in the fall term as soon as Fall grades are released. 
  • All transcripts must be submitted directly from the original college or university even if the courses have been transferred to another institution.

A $60 Application Fee (fee waivers available)

  • The fee is not required for students who will have completed an Associate of Arts degree at a Washington, Arizona, California or Oregon state community college by the time of enrollment and who are transferring directly to Seattle University.
  • Additional fee waivers may be available; information is provided when submitting the application.

If exam scores will be used to satisfy prerequisite requirements, official exam scores must be submitted by the application deadline.

Official Exam Scores may include: AP and CLEP scores.

Applicants for whom English is not a first/native language must demonstrate English Proficiency regardless of English language studies, academic history, residence in the United States or other English-speaking countries, or immigration status.

The Seattle University Transfer BSN application does not require or review the following items:

  • Recommendations of any kind
  • TEAS Test;
  • Certified Nursing Assistant Certification (you may include this information in the activity log portion of the application) 
  • High school transcript
  • SAT/ACT test scores (SU is a test optional institution)

Applicants apply to the Transfer BSN Program using the Seattle University Transfer Application. There is not a separate application to the BSN program.

Transfer Application Process

Students are admitted once a year, for the fall quarter.

Eligible applicants are limited to a maximum of two repeated prerequisite classes. This does not include prerequisite courses that must be repeated due to timespan requirements (ex: Math, Psychology, and Nutrition coursework must be completed within 10 years; science and statistics coursework within 5 years). The number of repeated classes will be a part of your application evaluation and can impact your eligibility for admission. Please provide additional information in your application explaining the reason for the repeated course(s).

AP courses may satisfy the math requirements. Applicants must submit official scores directly to Seattle University from the testing organizations.

Yes, all applicants must complete Intro to Biology along with the other required prerequisite courses.

No. However, applicants are highly encouraged to volunteer or job shadow in the health care field. This experience and exposure to the nursing role will help applicants better determine if nursing is the right professional fit. Applicants should include any relevant volunteer or work experience in their resume.
